WC 2014: Reaction to the group stage draw

So the draw for World Cup 2014 has just concluded, and some very interesting groups have been thrown up. Here is the draw in full:

Group A

Brazil will be very confident of topping their group, but second place could go right down to the wire. If I had to chose, I would pick Mexico as most likely to get second place.

Group B

A very, very strong group, which will feature a repeat of the 2010 final between Spain and Holland, but Chile are also a very strong outfit. Holland will be hopeful of finishing second behind Spain, if they improve on their dismal Euro 2012 showing.

Group C

Colombia are one of the dark horses for the tournament, they should top the group, while Ivory Coast and Japan will fight it out for second. Greece have been known to cause a shock in the past though, no one should take them lightly.

Group D

A horrible draw for England. Italy utterly outclassed us at Euro 2012, and Uruguay were semi-finalists in 2010. However Uruguay are no better than average at the back, and perhaps the lesser expectations on England will allow them to play without fear of failure. We will see.

Group E

Probably the weakest group overall, France will be mightily relieved, but they are more than capable of messing up. Switzerland will probably go through with them.

Group F

Argentina will be pleased with their draw, while Bosnia will be hopeful of finishing second and making the knockout round at their first ever World Cup appearance, but Nigeria will not make it easy for them.

Group G

The group of death. Germany and Portugal will be favourites to go through, but Ghana always play well at the World Cup, and the USA are a much more daunting opponent under Jurgen Klinsmann. This will go right down to the wire.

Group H

Belgium will likely top this one, and Russia are favourites to join them. Probably the most straightforward group.
